Evaluation - Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media production represents a particular social group through:
  • Gender
  • Class
  • Age

To see and understand what social group my piece fitted, I chose a few screenshots of my opening to demonstrate what/who was featured.

In my opening I feature pictures of my main character when she was younger, during the flashback at the beginning, and this shows her with her mother and father.

As you can see from both pictures, the social group mainly being portrayed is a white, middle class family.
This can be seen by the way both parents are dressed in a casual shirt and are seen as formally presented.
Within my film, I do follow a certain stereotype the kind of family and people represented in tragic drama films, for example in both The Fault in Our Stars and My Sister's Keeper, the families are white, with a stable marriage and respectable choices in life, which through the camera shots and attire, is seen within my opening.
Although I do not want to conform to all stereotypes, it is a good idea to follow them as it makes it clearer what genre you are aiming to create.

I also used setting to distinguish the social group I was aiming to represent. As you can see from the screenshots from my opening, the main character is a blonde female and it is based in her bedroom which contains a double bed and she is seen typing on a laptop, showing that her family are able to afford nice things and she has a spacious room, meaning she could live in a large house.
The message I am trying to portray in my opening is that she is spoilt because of the limited time her life has, so therefore if she wants something, she gets it. This is typical of a cancer patient story as the family want them to be as happy as they can be, which is why I include the convention of this storyline in my piece.

I was also able to use editing to represent the social group of the main character. I edited the photos of her younger life, which show a flashback, with a cross transition between the photos. This transition showed the different stages of her life, all in which a white, middle class family can be seen.
