Evaluation - Question 3

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that the film that I have created is capable of being produced by a major Hollywood Studio production company. The reasoning for my thought that this would be possible is because similar films to my own have been released by these big companies and this makes me believe that they are able to produce more like it, just with different storylines.

The main production company that I feel would be suitable to produce my film is Warner Bros. Television. The reason that I feel this is most suitable is because it has already produced films such as My Sister's Keeper (2009) and Sweet November (2001), which are both films that follow the same kind of story as my film, and both films hit it off with huge box office profits, with My Sister's Keeper gaining $95,714,875 at box office and Sweet November gaining $65,754,228. This kind of profit is life changing and means that my film could be made very successful if this production company was to release it, as thy have past experience with films of this genre and story.

Another media institution that I feel could distribute my media product is 20th Century Fox. The reason for this is because they have released sad films but mainly action and fairytale, meaning that my media product could be one hat breaks the mould and becomes a large hit with this particular company, instead of releasing a film with similar features like they usually do. 20th Century Fox also produced the two films which are currently the highest grossing films ever, with Titanic (1997) which totalled a gigantic $2,186,772,302 but Avatar (2007) just beating it with $2,787,965,087. This makes me feel confident that with film success' like that under their belt, they're capable of turning almost anything into a hit.

The usual process of doing this would be to release my film into the cinema and then further to produce it on DVD. This helps to gain profit fast and could possibly result in my media product having merchandise sold for it which would signify success.

This is all possible because although my product follows a lot of that genres conventions, it still has a different twist to it which makes it interesting to watch.

Evaluation - Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media production represents a particular social group through:
  • Gender
  • Class
  • Age

To see and understand what social group my piece fitted, I chose a few screenshots of my opening to demonstrate what/who was featured.

In my opening I feature pictures of my main character when she was younger, during the flashback at the beginning, and this shows her with her mother and father.

As you can see from both pictures, the social group mainly being portrayed is a white, middle class family.
This can be seen by the way both parents are dressed in a casual shirt and are seen as formally presented.
Within my film, I do follow a certain stereotype the kind of family and people represented in tragic drama films, for example in both The Fault in Our Stars and My Sister's Keeper, the families are white, with a stable marriage and respectable choices in life, which through the camera shots and attire, is seen within my opening.
Although I do not want to conform to all stereotypes, it is a good idea to follow them as it makes it clearer what genre you are aiming to create.

I also used setting to distinguish the social group I was aiming to represent. As you can see from the screenshots from my opening, the main character is a blonde female and it is based in her bedroom which contains a double bed and she is seen typing on a laptop, showing that her family are able to afford nice things and she has a spacious room, meaning she could live in a large house.
The message I am trying to portray in my opening is that she is spoilt because of the limited time her life has, so therefore if she wants something, she gets it. This is typical of a cancer patient story as the family want them to be as happy as they can be, which is why I include the convention of this storyline in my piece.

I was also able to use editing to represent the social group of the main character. I edited the photos of her younger life, which show a flashback, with a cross transition between the photos. This transition showed the different stages of her life, all in which a white, middle class family can be seen.

Evaluation

Within my evaluation I will need to evaluate and reflect upon the creative process and my experience of it and to do this will have to answer the following questions:

  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
  5. How did you attract/address your audience?
  6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

To do this, I need to use both audio and visual representations and will use examples from my media work as well.

First Cut

So here is my first cut for my opening 2 minutes of a film. It has not got all the features I want it to at the moment and there's a lot that I have got to edit.

I struggled to change the transition times to the times that I would've preferred, for example the transitions between the photo's is too fast, so for my second cut I would like to have changed these.

I also had some problems with the voice recordings, meaning I was unable to add voice recording to accompany the photos at the beginning for my first cut, which is something I will change for my final cut.

There were also transitions with music that were sloppy, which is again something else I would change for my final cut.

However, what I did like about my first cut is that I feel it was effective within the genre I had chosen and gives the sense of a tragedy by the music I used and I am also happy with the choice of shots I've made.

I am hoping to make these improvements which will hopefully result in a successful final cut.
